Hundreds of people gathered at Madombidzha on Saturday, 3 December, to pay their last respects to the late Annah Mbelengwa (87). Mbelengwa passed away at the Polokwane MediClinic on 25 November, following a long illness.
Among the scores of mourners were Judge Thogomelani Tshidada, well-known singer Penny Penny, the president of the Lemba Cultural Association (LCA) Pandelani Mutenda, church members, traditional leaders, community members, family and close friends.
Although the atmosphere was subdued, the ceremony resembled a celebration of a life well lived. Mbelengwa was the founder of the Christ at Madombidzha Church and everyone who knew her agreed that she had fully dedicated her life to the Lord. She also served on boards of numerous community structures.
Mutenda, from the LCA, described her as a “pioneer”, “a born leader” and “a woman of vision”. He said that the LCA, her family and the community as a whole were left with heavy hearts as they had lost one of the most influential members of their society.
Mbelengwa’s son, Mr Peter Mbelengwa, said that his mother had been a restrained and dignified woman. “For so many years, she served selflessly and faithfully in parishes throughout the country, and in those dark days she made herself available day and night to all who needed her. Part of our mourning is to celebrate her life, because she was a beacon of hope to the family, the church and the entire community. Our mother taught us to love God, live cleanly and always strive to live in peace and unity. Her life was well lived, and we have no doubt that she is rejoicing with the angels in her next life in the Kingdom of God,” he said.
