Well-known Venda traditional-music artist Ms Melva Ntshengedzeni Davhana has added her voice to those expressing concern over the increase in murders of women and children and cases of gender-based violence.
The 53-year-old musician, who lives in Khubvi outside Thohoyandou, said the recent spate of killings in her area had left her emotionally scarred. To raise awareness, she released a new Tshivenda traditional-music single titled Hafha Shongoni.
She collaborated with popular guitar wizard Ephraim Galaha Masindi, who also assisted with vocals. The single was released on 8 August and follows her 2023 single Tshidudu Tsha Mashonzha.
“I listen to the radio and read newspapers, and what I have realised is that killings and attacks on women are the main headlines. Women are being killed and maimed daily, not only in my locality but throughout Vhembe. This has troubled me greatly, and I have been thinking about how I could contribute to ending this violence,” she said.
Davhana expressed her concern about the brutality faced by women. “On Hafha Shongoni, I am trying to voice the plight of many women. Our plea to the government is to protect us against these killers. Those who commit murder should rot in jail. They do not deserve to be free, and we are worried to see these killers granted bail after a short period. This causes a lot of pain to bereaved families. The song is also a prayer to God to protect us as women,” she said.
Davhana also has big plans for her career. “I am planning to release a gospel album and a full Tshivenda traditional-music album, which will include the singles I have released. Hopefully, it will be out before the end of the year,” she said.

Tshivenda traditional music artist Fhatuwani Richard Mashele is a happy man. His first attempt at producing a Tshivenda album has been nominated for a South African Traditional Music Award (SATMA).
