'Facebook rapists' gets sentenced to two periods behind bars

The man dubbed the “Facebook rapist,” Mukovhe Makhavhu, also known as Elma Mutavhatsindi, was sentenced to two life terms by Judge Thogomelani Tshidada in the Limpopo High Court, Thohoyandou, sitting at Waterval on Tuesday.

Makhavhu was found guilty on multiple counts, including rape, sexual assault, and robbery. The conviction stems from incidents that occurred in 2021 in the bushes at Phiphidi and along the Mutshundudi River. Makhavhu, a self-proclaimed “prophet,” used his social-media account to lure women, whom he later raped and assaulted, into meeting him.

Makhavhu expanded his Facebook profile by making outrageous claims about his abilities, promising followers free prayer sessions for various needs, including job opportunities, marital issues, and healing. At one point, his Facebook page had more than 100,000 followers.

Before passing sentence, Judge Tshidada addressed the packed courtroom, emphasising the seriousness of the offences. He noted that the crimes had been premeditated and that Makhavhu had shown no mercy to his victims.

Mr. Itani Nenguda, chairperson of the men’s forum Munna Ndi Nnyi, welcomed the sentence as a warning to other would-be offenders. “As an organisation, we are elated and impressed by this sentence. When magistrates and judges impose sentences that match the gravity of the crime, we are pleased. This will undoubtedly serve as a deterrent and send a message that crime does not pay,” he said. Nenguda also commended everyone who worked on the case, praising the efforts of the justice system.

One of the victims, who asked to remain anonymous, expressed relief at the outcome. “Makhavhu must rot in jail. I’m happy that justice was served,” she said, adding that she hoped the sentence would deter others from committing similar crimes.
