Matsa Ofhani's art exhibition draws crowds and raises awareness

Matsa Ofhani (24), a talented artist from Ha-Thukhutha village near Thohoyandou, held his inaugural Digital Visual Arts Solo Exhibition from 15 to 27 October. The exhibition, presented in collaboration with Muzika Wa Afrika, Zues World (Pty) Ltd, and Ndalamo Arts Academy, attracted more than 300 attendees and showcased Matsa’s diverse and impactful body of work.

The event was a vibrant celebration of Matsa’s creativity and commitment to storytelling through art. Attendees were treated to a range of exceptional pieces that reflect not only his artistic vision but also the rich cultural narratives resonating deeply within his community. Matsa’s artwork spans painting, sculpture, and drawing, with a focus on various mediums, including oil, acrylic, pastel, pencil, charcoal, and pen.

Matsa’s journey began in high school, where his passion was sparked through art competitions. This eventually led him to enrol at the esteemed Ndalamo Art Academy under the mentorship of renowned artist Avhashoni Mainganye. Since then, he has collaborated with the Polokwane Art Museum and contributed to projects such as a mural at Shanduka Country Lodge.

A standout piece in the exhibition was an ironically titled painting, translated as “the corner of the stand or property.” This work highlights the pressing issue of the continued use of pit toilets in many South African households and schools.

“My aim is to raise awareness about the use of pit toilets and promote improved hygiene, sanitation, and child safety, especially in schools. I see this exhibition as a chance to bring art to the public, educating and inspiring people about the power and potential of local talent,” he said.

Looking ahead, Matsa hopes his next exhibition, whether digital or in-person, will attract even more supporters.
