Two finalists for Indoni My Heritage My Pride selected

The selection of finalists for the Indoni My Heritage My Pride pageant was held on Thursday, 20 June, in Shayandima Zone 1, where 25 participants from across the Vhembe region competed for top honours.

During the selection, Vhuthuhawe Malabi (16) of Gondeni la Hamabilu was selected as queen, while Mulalo Ramuima (24) of Manamani village was named king. They will represent the Vhavenda Kingdom later this year at the national stage of the Indoni My Heritage My Pride competition.

Malabi, a Grade 10 learner from Zwithuzwavhudi Secondary School, told the media that she was confident she would eventually bring back the title to Limpopo. “I’m excited to be selected as the queen to represent the Vhavenda Kingdom, and I will showcase our culture and tradition,” said Malabi. She urged other young girls and boys to participate actively in competitions such as the Indoni My Heritage My Pride because they will learn a lot about preserving culture and tradition.

One of the champions of the Indoni SA My Heritage My Pride pageant in the Venda Kingdom, Ms. Shonisani Mutengwe, congratulated Malabi and Ramuima for being selected to represent the kingdom as queen and king. According to Mutengwe, the young girls and boys who participate in the competition are taught some cultural ways of life, such as how their forefathers survived for so many years. They also learn how to prepare traditional foods such as vhuswa ha mikonde and vhutete, mashonzha (mopani worms), and muroho wa zwigwada.

She added that, as part of the programme, the contestants visited traditional leaders, where young boys and girls learnt about traditional practices, including how marriage was conducted in the past, how traditional leaders are installed, who qualifies for selection, and the principles of succession in Vhavenda traditional leadership.
