Great turnout for the 2021 Reviving Golden Games

More than 500 senior citizens from across Vhembe converged at the Thohoyandou Stadium on Thursday, 28 October, for the 2021 Reviving Golden Games.

Deputy manager of the Vhembe District Municipality (VDM)’s special programme, Mr Khathu Mapholi, said the aim of the event was to promote active aging and overall healthier lifestyles among senior citizens (above 60).

The games formally kicked off with a 2.6 km fun-walk from the Thohoyandou Indoor Sports Centre to the Thohoyandou Stadium, and included aerobics and other fun activities.

“Daily body activeness assists in eliminating chronic diseases, obesity, tiredness and many other sicknesses that affect the body’s system, especially as we grow older. Since the games had to be cancelled in 2020 due to the outbreak of the Covid-19 pandemic, we decided to host the reviving games this year,” Mapholi said.

Everyone who partook in this year’s games received certificates of participation as a way of acknowledging their efforts, and as a means of encouragement.

The Limpopo Provincial Treasurer of Older Persons, Mr Love Masia, thanked the VDM for staging the games again this year.

The executive mayor of the VDM, Dowelani Nenguda, who also participated in the 2.6 km fun walk, was delighted with the good turnout and to see everyone’s enthusiasm to participate. “Our elderly people who take part in the various sporting activities not only improve their own health and longevity, but also get the opportunity to interact with others from all cultural groups. We call upon young people to follow in their footsteps and emulate our elderly people by making sure they too stay healthy in a drug-free and progressive society,” said Nenguda.
