Women accused of stabbing young boyfriend to death

A night out for fun with friends turned deadly when a woman allegedly stabbed her 26-year-old boyfriend to death on their way back from a tavern. The deceased, Mr Phaduli Matshisevhe from Maebani, was allegedly stabbed on 31 May at Manavhela village.

One of the witnesses, who asked to remain anonymous, described what happened: “We were coming from the tavern at around 02:00 when an argument started between the couple. The two drank quite a lot of liquor at the tavern. We saw the man running away, with the woman following him with a knife in her hand. What happened next, we don't know, because it was dark,” he said.

Vhembe police spokesperson Sgt Vuledzani Dathi confirmed the incident. "We have opened a murder case against the girlfriend. According to statements taken, the deceased was stabbed around the neck and in the left hand," he said.

The police arrested Ungedzani Maemu (33) and she appeared in the Tshilwavhusiku Magistrate’s Court on 3 June. Her case was postponed to 10 June for a bail application.

The dead man's sister, Ms Naledzani Matshisevhe, said their family was devastated. "We are heartbroken by this tragedy. We hope the investigation will reveal what happened," she said.

Matshisevhe will be buried on Saturday, 8 June, at Maebane village.
