Shakes finally marries his sweetheart

In June last year, Limpopo Mirror shared the inspiring love story of local gospel star Shakes Mbedzi (31) and the love of his life, Lutendo Munyai (31). Their story illustrates how love can conquer anything and obvious physical differences such as height are no deterrent to love.

Shakes had vowed to wed the much-taller Lutendo as soon as the Covid restrictions were eased and, true to his word, after negotiations had been concluded between the families and lobola paid, he finally did put a ring on her finger.

The lobola celebrations, followed by the official wedding ceremony, was held at Khubvi village outside Thohoyandou on Saturday, 16 April.

Speaking to Limpopo Mirror a day after the celebrations, Shakes said that marrying his sweetheart was the biggest achievement in his life. “We have been living together for the past three years, but I always felt guilty for not being able to legally make her my wife. I am so happy that I have managed to realize my dream of marrying her. She is now officially ‘Mrs Mbedzi’, and I am very proud to be called this handsome woman’s husband.”

He thanked their friends and family for sharing this happy day with him and his wife, despite the cold weather. “This was one of the greatest days of our lives, and we do not have enough words to express our gratitude towards the huge support we received from family and friends. I am now the happiest man on earth because I am finally married to my beautiful wife, who means everything to me. This is the start of a new beginning, and we vow that nothing will separate us until the end of time.”

Lutendo too was happy to finally be called “Mrs Mbedzi”. “My husband has done something that will make me happy for the rest of my life. There is nothing more fulfilling than getting married to someone you love. I thank him for loving me and I promise to love him back unconditionally. He deserves all the love and care because he is the best gift the Lord has ever given me. I am looking forward to a happy and long life with this caring soul who knows what real love is.”

The elders of the Tshivenda music group, Adziambei Band, have warned that the new generation seems to be reluctant to preserve their indigenous music, which is full of African identity and wisdom. Luckily for them, some young musicians still care about traditional music. One such local “son-of-the-soil” artist is Joshua Tshikalange, who is taking Tshivenda traditional music to another level.
