McDonald’s honours for Benny’s

Benny’s Care were crowned the provincial champions of the McDonald’s U14 schools league in Polokwane on Saturday. They hammered SS Kgakwa Secondary from the Capricorn district 7-0 in the final.

In the thrilling final, the enthusiastic young players showed off their exceptional football skills and dribbled, passed and kicked their way to the top of the log.

The coach of Benny’s, Mr Mbishi Mokwena, said that he was happy with the way the team was gelling during the games. “The boys were doing their best and we have a good understanding.” He added that their aim was to use the tournament as a stepping stone to the national championship. “Apart from the fact that there is a lot at stake in the competition, it is time for us to fulfil our promises,” he said.

“We are proud of it and we want to keep the tradition going." Mokwena stated that they had a squad that had all the ingredients for winning the  national championship this year.  “I’ve told my boys that we can perform well this year, if we only focus and give our best. We are ready for the national final. By winning this year’s national final, we will not only make ourselves proud, but the community, our school and the province as well,” said  Mokwena.

The president of Sasfa Limpopo, Mr Hulisani Mabasa, praised McDonald’s for their decision to sponsor school football. "I'm very proud that we have grown young people of real quality," he said. He added that he was convinced that the association would produce stars in future who would receive international recognition. He further indicated that football had risen to be the world's number one sport in terms of participation and spectatorship.

Benny's care received several individual awards after the event. Trophies were awarded to Gundu Maluma (player of the tournament), Fresh Ngobeni (goalkeeper of the tournament), Mbishi Mokwena (coach of the tournament) and Results Kwerani (goal scorer of the tournament).

The national championship will be held from 1 to 3 October in Pretoria.
