Mushaathoni alumni not happy with matric results

Former students of Mushaathoni Secondary School expressed their deep disappointment with the school’s latest matric results. The Quintile 2 school achieved a mere 49.3% pass rate in last year’s matric results, marking a significant decline from 70.5% in 2020 and a slight rise from 64.4% in 2021 to 67.6% in 2022.

A group of the school’s former students organised a Back-to-School campaign on Friday, 26 January, starting at Sendedza Primary and Siloam Primary, the two main feeders for Mushaathoni Secondary School. Among the ex-pupils participating in the campaign were Mr Phumudzo Mulafhi from Fakatshimbi Protection and Investigations, Ms Vimbai Tawana, the COO of Fakatshimbi Protection and Investigations, Thivhilaeli Makatu from the Student Support Programme (SSP), Mr Gumani Mudzili from SSP, Mr Fanie Siema from SSP, Ward 33 councillor Khuliso Mukheli, and Mukhethwa Mukhesi from Mukhethwa Fashion Design.

Phumudzo Mulafhi encouraged learners to focus on their studies and respect their teachers. “What happened is all in the past. We now have a chance to start again and work harder to achieve better results.” Mulafhi also encouraged parents to play an active part in their children’s education. “Check how your children are performing in school. Ask them how things are going with their schoolwork as many learners suffer in silence,” he said.

The school’s principal, Mr Fhatuwani Thiba, stated that he and his staff members were committed to rectifying their mistakes and making Mushaathoni great again. “We are very hurt by the results, and there is no way we can justify them, except that we are currently experiencing a shortage of teachers in some subjects. But we are working on a way forward with different stakeholders,” he said.

The SGB chairperson, Mr Albert Mufunwaini, expressed gratitude for the support of the former students, who are dedicated to assisting the school in improving its results.
