Professor Matodzi Tommy Mariba and his band, the Magic Strings, released their second single, titled “Chezla Pozla”, on Friday, 10 November. The single is part of their 10-track album, “One Night in Vegas”, which is expected to be released early next year.

Mariba, a highly educated musician from Vhembe, was born and raised in Phadzima village in the Vhulaudzi area. Apart from his musical pursuits, he holds the position of HOD of the orthopaedic surgery unit and head of the spinal unit at Doctor George Mukhari Academic Hospital, where he has been practicing since 2012. Mariba’s musical journey started many years ago when he learned to play the acoustic guitar in primary school. He initiated a YouTube channel, ‘Beautiful Guitars’, two years ago, focusing on guitar reviews and related gear.

“One Night in Vegas” was recorded at Burning Shack Studios and produced by Mulalo Mukwevho, who also plays the bass guitar. Blessing Mudzanani handles the electric guitar, and Hangwi Netshifhefhe, from the famous group Cornerstone, takes the lead vocals. Mariba, the main songwriter, also plays the acoustic guitar.

The first single from the album, “Khanyisile Come Home” - released on 11 August - received two nominations for the Music On The Hill Awards for Best Afro-Pop Single and Best Music Video. “Chezla Pozla” is expected to perform just as well.

The Magic Strings performed live at Khakhathi Tshisikule’s 51st birthday celebration at Enos Nefale Eco Estate on 7 October this year.
