Benny’s to represent province in Kay Motsepe Cup

Benny’s Care Soccer Academy performed admirably once more when they won the provincial finals of the Sanlam Kay Motsepe Cup at the Mahwelereng Stadium on Saturday.

They played to a 1-all draw with Mmamoka High, but in the penalty shoot-out they scored one goal more than the team from Capricorn. With their 6-5 victory, Benny's received R100 000 and won a shot at the R1 million prize money for South Africa's richest school competition.

A fortnight ago, the U/14 team of Benny's won the provincial final of the McDonald's school's league and received R100 000 for being the champions

Ashley Mailula of Mmamoka had an early opportunity for a goal in the opening minutes but shot into the hands of the opponents' keeper, Freddy Masida, from the penalty area. Karabo Malebana of Benny's shot over the bar with only the keeper to beat a few minutes later and Azwitamisi Tshabuse of Benny’s was yellow-carded for a rough tackle.

In the 30th minute, the well-timed shot of Gift Khangale of Benny’s missed the poles by a whisker. Zano Muleba of Benny’s dribbled past a number of defenders and scored in the 35th minute, making the score 1-0 at the break.

Mmamoka started the second half at a very fast pace, giving their opponents no moment to breathe. The local lads should have scored in the 60th minute, but their striker, Khotso Mafishi, hesitated for too long and the defender of the opposition sent the ball out.

Mashudu Motlago equalised after he received a square ball from  David Sebale in the 83rd minute.  The keeper of Benny’s, Freddy Masida, became a hero when he saved a sure goal from the boot of Mutshidzi Nemaxwi.
