Lowane appointed new Makhado Speaker

The Makhado Municipality has appointed Cllr Lindiwe Lowane as its new Speaker during a special council meeting that was held at the municipal council chamber on Monday.

Lowane is also the ward councillor for Ward 16. She is not a new person in the municipality as she has served in the executive council of the municipality before. She first joined the municipality in 2003 as a ward councillor.

Lowane also served as a full-time councillor, heading the portfolio committee for community services in 2006. She took over from Cllr Tebogo Mamorobela, who has been acting in the position since April.

Accepting the responsibilities of the position, Lowane said that she felt honoured that the ANC had trusted her with the job. "I will ensure that council's ethics are adhered to and I will always liaise with both the office of the Speaker and the mayor," she said.

Councillors from other political parties also congratulated Lowane on her new appointment. The former acting Speaker, Cllr Tebogo Mamorobela, congratulated Lowane on her appointment. She said that she was quite sure that, as an experienced councillor, the newly appointed Speaker would perform well. "It is good to see that government is indeed empowering women," said Mamorobela.
