New clinic for the Damani region

The MEC for Roads and Transport, Mr Lehlogonolo Masoga, has officially handed over the new Damani Clinic to the community.

The event took place at the clinic a fortnight ago.

Masoga urged the community to take care of the facility “so that it can be used by generations and generations to come. Government provided this clinic to make sure that you get easy access to health services in your own village,” said Masoga.

He also encouraged nurses to provide good service to the community. He reminded the community members about the importance of having good relations with the nurses.

According to Masoga, clinics are expected to provide 24-hour services to the community.  He said the government wanted to make sure that patients were attended to anytime they went to clinics. “Gone are days when our people were told to come back the following day when they visited clinics during the night.”

Mailausungwa Kennedy Tshivhase said he was happy that his community would get medical attention on their doorstep in a modern facility. He said he was also hoping that more services would be delivered to his people.

Tshilidzi Maphangule, who is the additional member of Damani clinic board, says the old clinic was first built in 1996, following the initiative of the late Chief Mudinda Ramagwede. When it started operating in July 2009, it was only serving the community during the day.

The new building was completed late last year. It now serves community members from 11 villages. Before the clinic was built, community members used to walk for more than 15 kilometres to Makonde Clinic.

One of the people who attended the function, Alidzuli Munyai, said: “I am happy that we are going to get 24-hour service. In the past, it was very difficult to get medical attention from the clinic after hours. I hope the new service will be implemented soon,” said Munyai, a pensioner.
