Nedbank Cup: Baroka and City in Limpopo derby

The Nedbank quarterfinal matches will be played this weekend. Local fans are expected to stream to the Old Peter Mokaba Stadium in Polokwane on Sunday afternoon for the much-talked-about Limpopo derby between Baroka FC and their elder brothers, Polokwane City.

Baroka's record in the Nedbank Cup speaks volumes. Their way to the quarterfinal stage went via two Absa Premiership sides, Chippa United and Lamontville Golden Arrows, whom they beat 3-2 and 2-0 respectively. Baroka did not reach the quarterfinal stage by default. They are currently leading the pack in the NFD with 50 points, one ahead of Highlandspark.

City will have the huge task of stopping the strikers of Baroka, Jacky Motshegwa, Ndivhuwo “Segere” Ravhuhali, Loyiso Simandla, and the league’s top goal scorer, Thabiso Kutumela. Baroka must, however, keep an eye on the City’s scoring machines, Jabulani Maluleke and Rendani Ndou, or else it will be the end of their Nedbank Cup road.

Superport United will host Mpumalanga Black Aces in the other quarterfinal match that will be played this evening. United’s captain, Dean Furman, says they will use Black Aces as their stepping stone to the semifinal of the competition. His counterpart, Collins Mbesuma, warned United, saying they must not underestimate them or else they will be in for a big surprise.

Free State Stars and Bidvest Wits will meet at the Goble Park Stadium in Bethlehem tomorrow afternoon. Bidvest Wits and Free Stars will be meeting for the second time within the space of seven days after playing to a goalless draw in their league match at the Bidvest Stadium last Sunday.

The Absa Premiership pace setters, Mamelodi Sundowns, will host Orlando Pirates at the Lucas Moripe Stadium tomorrow evening.
