Foundation aims to empower the disabled with skills

The dream of a radio presenter to reach out and assist fellow disabled people has finally started to materialise. The Muphirimia Foundation was officially introduced during a function held at The Gerbs Resorts at Muswodi Dipeni on Thursday, 28 March.

The foundation is the brainchild of Phalaphala FM presenter Humbulani Nengovhela, who has been exposed to the challenges facing the disabled for most of his life. The wheelchair-bound Nengovhela from Tshaulu has fought for the rights of disabled people, but always in an informal capacity. He cherished the dream of starting a foundation that would empower them.

Among those attending last week’s launch were local artists Jinika, Awee, Vho Tshimangadzo Ester Sinyegwe, and Khakhathi Murida, who entertained the guests. Mr. Maluta Mulibana from the Premier’s office was the guest speaker.

Nengovhela said the plight of the disabled had bothered him for most of his life. “A lot of the disabled are looked down upon and not taken seriously, be it in the community, job market, or other spheres of life. We are here to change all that. We are imparting skills in sewing, agriculture, and business, among others. The grants they are getting are not enough, and the skills will help sustain them and make extra income,” he said.

Nengovhela further indicated that they already have projects in other areas, including Muswodi, where the foundation was launched. "We have a good working relationship with the local traditional leader, who also donated R4,000 to assist the projects. We hope the foundation will contribute towards the improvement of the lives of the disabled. We are also calling on all the disabled from all corners of the district to make use of this foundation," Nengovhela said.

For more information, Nengovhela can be contacted at 082-8444583.
