Some of the Thulamela local municipality's councilors were photographed surrounding the mayor, Cllr Grace Mahosi when she cut the ribbon to symbolise the official opening of the streets in Thohoyandou.

“Please take care of your new road”

The dusty and muddy streets of Mbaleni, Magidi and Thohoyandou Block F will soon be a thing of the past, thanks to completed a R171 million tarred road.

Speaking during the recent official opening of the road at Makwarela town hall, Mayor Grace Mahosi of Thulamela said that the handing over of a good tarred road should mean that the residents must take care of it. “Don’t burn tires on these roads. You have ownership, and protect them, so that we can move forward and construct roads at other villages," she said.

She referred to service delivery protests and said that, should there be any dissatisfaction within communities about any matter, the residents should speak to their elected municipal councillors for assistance.

According to Mahosi, the completion of the project, consisting of two roads, brings huge relief to motorists and communities in the affected areas and the municipality was excited about it. The project, which started some two years ago, was completed within the projected time frame. The upgraded roads included Unit E (formerly Magidi), Makwarela Extension 3, Mbaleni Makwarela Extension 4 and the Tshibevha link road in Thohoyandou. The total distance of all these projects upgraded from gravel to tarred road is about 17 kilometres

Ms Florence Dzivhani of  Unit E (Magidi) was over the moon to find out that her community will no longer have to worry during heavy rains as the muddy roads will be a thing of the past. “Our streets were dusty, and during heavy rains they became muddy and our people were struggling to get to work and learners could not go to school. Motorists used to suffer and their vehicles were damaged quickly, due to the potholes," said Dzivhani.
