Gogo Mkhachani celebrates a century

Gogo Mkhachani Kubayi celebrated her 100th birthday at Chavani last weekend.

One of the gogo’s grandchildren and president of Safa Vhembe, Mr George Kubayi, said that his granny had had a huge impact on his life. “She was always strict and encouraged us to do good things in life. We are grateful that God spared her for us for such a long time and that we continue to learn good things from her,” he said.

He mentioned that she "moulded us, using the Bible as a yardstick to a prosperous life. We would otherwise not be what we are today, if it were not of her strong belief in God”.  He added that a family who did not have senior citizens lacked advice as they provided wisdom.

Gogo Kubayi remembers the old days, when there were no schools, clinics, hospitals and roads. "I would like more generations to know about our times, although I believe that I will still live for many years to come,” she added. “Besides the food and exercise that can make one live long, there is one secret to a longer life. Obey God’s rules, respect others and God will reward you handsomely,” she said.
