“Use water sparingly,” asks provincial government

All residents of Limpopo are being urged to heed all calls to use water sparingly, respect water restrictions and observe all guidelines to save water.

This comes after the provincial executive council of the Limpopo government had taken a decision to declare the province a disaster area through national prescripts.

The spokesperson for the Limpopo government, Mr Phuthi Seloba, said a thorough assessment of the drought situation had found that all districts and local municipalities in Limpopo were facing the worst drought conditions recorded in years.

The declaration of the province as a disaster area will assist the government to unlock the necessary resources to assist the affected communities, he added.

“Currently, the Department of Agriculture and Rural Development has set aside R3 million to assist affected farmers through the provision of livestock feed. However, this amount does not cover other areas, such as human consumption. It is for this reason that the executive committee is unlocking other avenues, including the activation of the Drought Relief and Disaster Management Act of 2002,” he said.

He said that the provincial treasury and Department of Water and Sanitation would provide further assessments.
