Fourth body dumped at Itsani

The Itsani area has become a dumping area for people killed in other parts of the region. This was the reaction of residents at Itsani, following the discovery of the body of a woman in the area.

She is the fourth person found murdered and dumped in the area in recent times.

Residents of  Itsani and neighbouring Manamani village outside Thohoyandou woke up on Monday to a disturbing scene, when a semi-naked body of a woman was found dumped at an irrigation furrow. She is believed to be in her late twenties and was found by a woman on her way to work at the nearby irrigation scheme.

The body was found without underwear and with her skirt on her knees. She had deep gash wounds on her head and face, reminiscent of an attack by a blunt object or even having been stoned to death. Not far from her body were blood stains on the ground.

News of the body spread like wildfire. Within a short space of time, the whole area was swarming with onlookers who wanted a glimpse of the dead woman.

Takalani Singo (21) of Matieni, who found the body, stood calmly at the scene. “I was on my way to water my vegetables at our plot not far from here when I decided to check the availability of water. I was so shocked to find that there was no water, but instead, a body was blocking the water. I have never seen anything like this in my life, it was so scary,” she said

Mr Tshilidzi Nethonzhe, the local Tshisahulu Sanco secretary, who was at the scene, said they were fed-up with having their area become a dumping ground for bodies killed somewhere else. “Not long ago, the body of a woman who was killed somewhere elsewas found here, and two more bodies were found not far from here. Our area has become a dumping ground for corpses and it is giving our area a bad name,” he said.

He said they were going to beef up street patrols and people would be questioned and searched if found loitering at night.

Thohoyandou police spokesperson Const Avhafarei Tshiovhe urged people with missing relatives to come to the station. “We have opened up a murder case and investigations continue,” she said.
