Univen student stabbed to death

A third year nursing student at the University of Venda, Miss Takalani Mbulungeni (21) of Vhurivhuri was stabbed to death on Thursday afternoon (9 May).

According to the police, it is alleged that her boyfriend, who suspected her of cheating on him, stabbed her repeatedly, killing her instantly. It happened behind the student sports hall at about 17:30.

According to her father, Phineas Mbulungeni, the incident came as a great shock to the family. "Takalani was our ray of hope. She was very humble and obedient, and she had all the qualities that a parent could want from a child. We are very devastated about the whole incident," he said.

He added that her death is a double blow to the family, as it happened when they were busy preparing the funeral of her late uncle, who is to be buried over the weekend.

University spokesperson, Mr Takalani Dzaga said the incident shocked the whole university fraternity. "We do not expect students to be involved in such things, as they are here to study. We are now urging all students with problems to please visit the student counselling office where they would be helped, so that we can avoid similar incidents,” he said.

A police spokesperson also added that the suspect, who allegedly  has a child with the deceased, tried to commit suicide by cutting his throat with a knife. He was taken to hospital in a serious condition.
