'Godfather of reggae' to record live at Babylon

One of the best reggae artists to emerge from South Africa, Colbert Mukwevho, will be recording a live music album at the Babylon Resort in Thohoyandou on Saturday (30^th).

Mukwevho, often referred to as the “Godfather of reggae music,” has previously been compared to international legends such as Bob Marley. For Saturday’s live recording, he has teamed up with his revamped band, and they are rehearsing daily.

Born in Tshitomboni tsha ha Mmbubana, Mukwevho’s musical journey began in the 1970s, singing with his family band, The Thrilling Artists. He formed his own group, The Comforters, and released several albums. His breakthrough came with the album “Month End Lover”, featuring the hit track “Immortal Words”, which captivated reggae enthusiasts nationwide.

In 1992, his album “I do nela rothe” showcased another hit, “Kha tambe na thanga dzawe” (“Play with your age mates”). The lyrics of this song warned young girls from becoming involved with older men. This song almost became a national anthem, solidifying Mukwevho’s impact on the music scene.

Mukwevho said that several musical groups would also perform on Saturday. Supporting groups include Khakhathi and Friends, Ramzey, P. Postman, and Humbulani Ramagwedzha.
