The Imbewu Ye Themba Youth Choir from Elim Mpheni, Block D2, achieved success at the First Annual Talent Show held at the Shitachi Destination Life Bible Church on Saturday, 13 January. The choir secured the first position in the music category and was rewarded with a trophy, certificate, and medal.
The competition, hosted by Tsunduka Nwandule from Nwa Mhanzi village in Bungeni, featured 46 competitors. West B Pantsula won the dance category, while Ndzalama Mahungu claimed first place in the poetry category.
Ms Kharendwe Magadagela, a member of the choir, expressed their excitement about winning their first award. “The choir feels honoured and grateful to have won gold at the First Annual Show. It is a testament to the choir members’ hard work and dedication, and we are happy to have done our community proud. We competed against two other choirs, and despite the strong competition, in the end, our talent led to victory,” she said.
Established by Mr. Percy Mashau three years ago on 4 March, the Imbewu Ye Themba Youth Choir now boasts 25 members. Mashau said that the choir had been inspired by a desire to bring people together through music and to create a space for individuals of all backgrounds and skill levels to enjoy the art of choral singing. “We wanted to create a sense of belonging and connection through music. The choir also seeks to provide a space for people to express themselves and share their talents with others,” he said.
Since the start of this journey together, the choir has encountered various challenges, including finding rehearsal space, raising funds, and managing the different levels of musical ability among its members. But despite these challenges, the choir has remained committed to its mission and has continued to grow and develop.

Tshivenda traditional-music lovers are in for a treat with a collaboration between Tshivenda traditional music legend and veteran Solomon Mathase and popular poet and guitarist Dzomo la Venda. The two were spotted on Saturday, 20 April, at a function in Thohoyandou where they showcased their talents during a live performance.
