“The true beauty of music is that it connects people. It carries a message, and as an artist I am the messenger. Being an artist comes with challenges and I have to overcome those challenges.”
Those were the words from Tondani “Sugar T” Mulidzi (25), who has released his debut album 'Dumbu'. He delineated his musical journey as a milestone. “To release this album is a great achievement in my life, because financially you have to be well adjusted for an album to be released. I managed to raise the money,” he said.
During his early childhood, Mulidzi used to listen and became inspired by the famous international rap artist Eminem. “I started singing in 2009 while I was in Grade 11. I used to listen to Eminem but decided to rap in my own language,” he said.
Mulidzi stated that he wanted to encourage people, especially those who already given up on life, and give them a good message to change their lives. He further stated that he realised the need to encourage youths who abuse drugs and alcohol as those substances are destroying their lives.
The debut album is comprised of ten songs. Zwiambavha, Thotho, Dumbu, Thase, Songolila, Muvenda boy, My way, Hotanganana, Zwiambavha remix and Let me go. Tracks such as Thotho, Dumbu and Thase have already dominated the local markets.
When asked about what to expect from him in the future, he replied that he wanted to own his music record label. He further said that he wanted the youth to look up to him as their role model.
Mulidzi is still busy with his studies. He is in his second year in mechanical engineering at the South West Gauteng College.
