The 13th edition of the Munghana Lonene FM Xitsonga Music Awards, which took place a fortnight ago, saw many singers and musicians receiving praise and honour and cash prizes.

The station handed out four special recognition awards to Joel Bvuma, aka Xihumbuyani, legendary MC Mabasa, Vusi Mahlasela and Mozambican Xidimingwana (Bernardo Domingos Onuane).

The station manager, Mr James Shikwambana, said that, despite some technical problems, the event was a clear testimony that the awards were growing. “We reserved 15 000 tickets and they were all sold out,” he said. “The success always keeps us under pressure, because every year we have to ensure they are better than the previous year.”

The prestige award, the Dr Thomas Chauke Artist of the year, was bestowed on Percy Mfana. “For me it’s an honour to win this award, in the sense that the award has been named after a gentleman who is one of the Xitsonga music stalwarts,” he said. “There is still a long way to go in the music industry, so that we can be fully recognised. And I want to thank Munghana Lonene for this groundbreaking work.”

Mfana also received a cash prize of R50 000. The awards in other categories came with R12 000 prize money.

The other recipients for this year were Team Nyenya (best Xitsonga newcomer), Patience Ntuli (best Xitsonga gospel song), Vuyelwa (best Xitsonga disco song), Moca Ft. Mcbone & Junia Mkhari (best Xitsonga RnB/Hip Hop), Dr Sithole, Sunglen, Zozo & Comrade Xigevenga (#50 Ya Vuhaxi special award), Gami Swag Ft. Xpanere (best Xitsonga house song), Kenny Bevhula Ft. Sunglen, Prince Rhangani, Benny Mayengani and Percy Mfana (best Xitsonga Collaboration), Muzesh & Florah (best Xitsonga Duo/Group), Kenny Bevhula (best Xitsonga Male Artist), Florah N’wa Chauke (best Xitsonga Female Artist), Hammy popular song of the year).

Shikwambana had apologised unreservedly to all stakeholders who were badly affected by the logistical nightmare that occurred during the presentation of the awards. “Without necessarily trying to pass the buck, the plan collapsed when the service provider was instructed by the joint operational committee (JOC) to remove the marquees that had initially been erected on Thursday, the 4th of November, due to a lack of space,” he said.

“The decision forced the service provider to replace the marquees with stretch tents. The initial plan was to categorise the seating arrangement … i.e. nominees, invited guests and those who had bought tickets, but the plan collapsed late on Friday due to the JOC decision and we were forced to put everybody in one place. Your continued support is always appreciated.”
