Maoka wants to restart Musina sports developmental league

Locally born and bred sportsman Theodore Maoka is looking to bring new life to the sport scene in Musina.

Maoka (54) started his own football career at the age of 13. “I was born a sportsman. My parents used to play tennis, and I usually accompanied them to the tennis court in Musina. The tennis court was next to a soccer field. One day, when I was busy collecting tennis balls for my parents, a teacher who was busy training soccer approached me and asked me if I wanted to play soccer. I played to my best ability, and that was how I started my soccer journey,” he recalled.

He played for several soccer teams, including Eleven Experience, Messina Sovetso Pirates, Messina Kaizer XI and Shayandima Bobs Stars. In 2010, he won the title for best male sports personality at the Mayoral Awards.

“The community is pressuring me to revive sports and start a new developmental league in Musina,” he said. “For more than 10 years there has not been many competitive sports, especially soccer, in Musina. This should be a thing of the past. I have the necessary skills to develop sports. I don’t want to occupy a position in the sporting arena, but to teach whoever is willing to learn and develop. Once I see it is taking shape, I will leave it to them to take over,” Maoko said.
