Local teams participate in Musina Winter Games

A lot of excitement exists among the more than 70 teams of various sporting codes that are participating in the 22nd week-long edition of the Annual Musina Municipal Mayoral Winter Games.

This was displayed by their joyous mood during the official opening ceremony of the games at the Lesley Manyathela Stadium on Monday. The aim of the annual sports extravaganza is to keep young people off the streets during the winter school holidays.

Registered teams were sourced from all 12 wards of Musina Municipality. Winning teams will receive cash and medals at the weekend.

Cllr Nkele Milanzi, who officially opened the tournament, urged participating teams, sports lovers and community members to conduct themselves well during the tournament. “This is one of the prime events on the calendar of the municipality. The tournament is here to unite us and help us to develop young talent in various sporting codes. We will be happy to receive positive feedback from the organizers because we are putting in a lot of resources to build the image of this initiative.”

She said the municipality was pleased with the high number of teams participating in this year’s tournament. “This clearly indicates that the games are growing from strength to strength on an annual basis. The games are not all about prizes but about social cohesion and creating a sporting community free from hatred and crime. Those who will not get prizes are also winners because they took part in this community-building initiative.”

She added that no one could dispute the fact that Musina was the home of sports. “Through our annual winter games and Two Countries Marathon, we have discovered and nurtured sports and athletics personalities who were able to compete in the national and international spheres. We want to produce more stars like the late Lesley Manyathela, who made a name for himself with both Orlando Pirates and Bafana Bafana.”

She mentioned that the municipality prided itself on producing a sports celebrity such as Isaac Dzamuluma Mbedzi. The SABC 2010 Newcomer Sports Journalist of the Year, Mbedzi is a multiple-award-winning sports commentator who specializes in soccer, cricket, boxing and rugby.  “We have Khomotso Masianuga, who plays for the Limpopo Baobabs. This is the netball team that plays in the Brutal Fruit Premier League that competes with 10 other teams across South Africa. In simple terms, this league is equivalent to the Premier Soccer League in football.”

Milanzi concluded by wishing the participating teams good luck throughout the duration of the tournament.
