FUBS are the PIB/MTG champions

Fundudzi United Brothers (FUBS) were crowned the new PIB/MTG champions at the Makonde Home Defenders grounds on Saturday. They beat Mutale Vikings 1-0 in the final.

The game was initially abandoned two weeks ago after the fans invaded the pitch while the teams were busy taking the penalty shootout.

Vikings were unstoppable in the first 20 minutes of the game, but their fighting spirit faded with time. They missed a clear chance in the ninth minute when Innocent Nephalama went loose from the left corner and unleashed a half volley from just outside the box. David Khakhu, the United Brothers’ keeper, braved the hot shot and palmed the ball away for a corner kick.

FUBS took the game to Vikings towards the end of the first half, but their strikers fumbled at the goal finish. Thabelo Ntshauba, the United Brothers’ left-footed striker, could not believe his eyes in the 39th minute. He tried his luck with a close-range ground cutter and suffered the pain of watching the ball miss the target by inches.

FUBS were awarded a free kick nine minutes into the last half. Thabelo Ntshauba beat the keeper with a half volley from the free kick. United Brothers introduced Marvellous Ntsieni for Awelani Mulaudzi towards the end of the game. United Brothers played defensive football in the last 10 minutes of the game. At that stage, Vikings were firing on all cylinders.

United Brothers were presented with R20 000, a floating trophy, gold medals and a soccer kit during a ceremony at the grounds shortly after the final whistle.

Mutale Vikings received R10 000, silver medals and a soccer kit. Mukula Young Brothers, who finished in the third position, were given R7 500 and bronze medals while the fourth-placed side, Tshaulu Hungry Lions, took home R5 000.
