Blue Eagles fly over Cobra Stars

Muziafera Blue Eagles kept their title hopes alive by beating Cobra Stars 2-1 in their MMK Administrators League match at the Tshisaulu Mmbengeni Kone Sport Field on Sunday afternoon.

The fact that Cobra Stars were on course for the league title before Sunday’s encounter was a good reason for them not to throw in the towel, even after they were reduced to 10 men.

Both sides displayed entertaining football from the first whistle, with the defenders leaving nothing to chance within their danger zones. Blue Eagles were the first to knock on the opposition's door. In the ninth minute, their diminutive midfielder, Phuluso Mulaudzi, received a neat pass from Lufuno Munyai and tried his luck with a half volley from the 25-meter area. The ball missed the target by inches.

That, however, did not kill the team’s fighting spirit. They continued to demonstrate team work, with their midfielders dishing out some killer-passes to the strikers. They took the lead in the 27th minute. A defender of Cobra Stars, Athituwi Mathada, handled the ball intentionally within the box. That prompted the referee, Mr Mulalo Nesengani, to award a penalty to Blue Eagles and give Athituwi Mathada his marching orders as well.

Hulani Mphephu, who scored a brace, made no mistake from the white spot. The visitors from Tshitungulwane enjoyed the 1-0 lead until proceedings for the first half came to an end.

The home side approached the last stanza with more aggression. They found the equalizer in the 65th minute. Mulalo Ranwedzi forced his way through the defence of Eagles and blasted in a rocket from inside the box.

Eagles scored the winner in the dying minutes of the game. Hulani Mphephu went loose from the 25-meter area and unleashed a ground cutter from inside the box to ensure that his side went back home with full points.

The players and fans of Blue Eagles celebrate the team’s winning goal.
