Brothers and Happy Boys in mayoral semis

The Makhuvha Stadium will be a good place to be on Sunday afternoon. That is where the semi-final matches of the Thulamela Mayoral Cup Tournament will be staged. The teams that secured places in the semi-final stage are Mudaswali United Brothers, Maraxwe Happy Boys, Tshilavulu Elite and Tshiulungoma FC.

The opening match will be between Mudaswali United Brothers and Maraxwe Happy Boys. United Brothers beat Tshikonelo United 4-0 to secure a place in the semi-final. The match will start at 13:00. United Brothers will have a mammoth task to stop the Boys’ strikers, Victory Tshivhase and Lufuno Netshitongwe.

The day’s programme will be wrapped up by the encounter between Tshilavulu Elite and Tshiulungoma FC. Elite beat Luvhimbi Western 5-1 in the quarterfinal stage of the tournament, while Tshiulungoma’s way to the semis went via Vondwe Dangerous Tigers, whom they beat 6-5.

Aluwani Makhura and Ndamulelo Netshidongololwe are Elite’s secret weapons. Tshiulungoma will pin their hopes on Ndivhuwo Khathula and Livhuwani Makondelela for goals.

According to the rules of the tournament, no extra time will be added where a game ends in a draw; instead, the teams will proceed straight to a penalty shootout.

This year’s champions will walk away with R15 000, soccer kit, gold medals, eight soccer balls and a floating trophy. The runners-up will receive R10 000, a soccer kit and silver medals. The third- and fourth-placed sides will receive R7 000 and R5 000 respectively, as well as a soccer kit. The teams booted out of the tournament in the quarter-final stage will each receive a consolation prize of R1 000.

The tournament’s top goal scorer, best goalkeeper, best referee and the best player will also receive awards.

The final is scheduled for Saturday, 4 May, at a venue still to be announced.
