Matsila to continue to sponsor sport

Chief Livhuwani Matsila of the Matsila Development Trust will continue to sponsor a local soccer tournament for schools.

This was announced during the prize-giving ceremony of the Sinthumule/Kutama Community Sport Development Tournament at Ravele on New Year’s Day.

Matsila urged young people to stay away from drugs and alcohol and to be law-abiding. He said if young people stayed away from criminal activities, the economy of the country would boom and there would be nothing more to scare investors away.

"I think soccer coaches in the country will do well to visit our areas and tap talent, as good soccer is played here," he added. According to him, the youngsters from the different schools had done well in the tournament and it was only a matter of time before some of them would play in the top league.

The mayor of the Makhado Local Municipality, Cllr Samuel Munyai, appealed to businesspeople to get involved in promoting local activities. The public relations officer of Sinthumule/Kutama Community Sport Development said that no amount of words could express his appreciation for what the sponsors are doing for them. He appealed to other businesspeople to follow these sponsors’ example. He added that "it is brutal for businesspeople to enrich themselves at the expense of the people and do nothing in return towards the development of the area".

During the prize-giving ceremony that took place after the final, the amount of R90 000 was distributed to the winners. R15 000 went to the champions, Zamenkomste FC, who also received a new soccer kit, gold medals and a floating trophy. Maila Pull together (second) went home with R10 000, a new soccer kit and silver medals. Matamela FC collected R5 000 and bronze medals for ending in third position, while Madombidzha Chris United, who ended in fourth position, received R4 000.
