Phadziri FC crowned as new champions

Phadziri FC were crowned the new champions of the James Rasimphi Summer tournament when they beat SMSA FC 8-7 on penalties at Maisa a fortnight ago.

SMSA had nobody but themselves to blame for the defeat. They squandered numerous scoring opportunities in the match.

The score was not a true reflection of the match, as the Phadziri side missed countless chances. SMSA had their first taste of bad luck in the sixth minute, when Neo Moagi shot into the hands of the opponents' keeper, Pfariso Malatji, from the penalty area.

Ndamulelo Mukwevho of SMSA became the first player to receive a yellow card. Phadziri realized that it would be difficult to find the net if they continued volleying from behind and then started to cool the ball down in the middle of the park. They hit the back of the net, but the referee ruled the player offside.

The second half started at a snail's pace, with both teams struggling to penetrate each other’s defence. SMSA gained momentum as the game progressed. It was in the 66th minute that their lethal striker, Rudzani Munyai, missed a fortune. He shot wide with the keeper, Pfariso Malatji, well beaten.

Realizing that their scoring chances were slim, SMSA effected the first change to their starting 11. They introduced Ndolivhuwa Nthambeleni, Lukasi Shlolo and Khongelani Chauke and sacrificed Temosho Matabane, Nadmulelo Mukwevho and Takalani Tshivhase.

Phadziri went home with R8 000, soccer kit and a floating trophy. SMSA received R3 500 and a new kit. Mpheni Home Defenders ended in the third spot and received R 2000.
