Berea beat Home Defenders in final

Berea FC came back from a 0-1 deficit to beat Mpheni Home Defenders 6-4 in the final of the Vhembe Mayoral Cup at the Rabali Stadium on Saturday.

Berea were without their team’s head coach, Mr Rofhiwa Muligwe, who parted ways with the club last week to search for greener pastures. Both sides displayed entertaining football from the onset to the bitter end. Khumbudzo “Shavy” Muvhango, the Defenders’ left winger, was a thorn in the flesh of the defenders of Berea. Muvhango did not lose his original fighting spirit, even though he was warned with a yellow card for obstruction in the 24th minute.

The tempo of the game increased with time as the midfielders went on dishing out some defence-splitting passes from the middle of the park.

Home Defenders took the lead two minutes before the referee, Mr Fhulufhelo Masindi, blew the half-time whistle. Their Rastafarian midfielder, Ndaedzo Mareda, tried his luck from 35 meters out with a half volley. A defender of Berea deflected the ball back into his own net in an effort to clear.

Home Defenders strengthened their midfield by introducing Foster Magodimisa, Dakalo Nwanamidwa and Ivan Ncube for Rabelani Ncube, Lesly Maluma and Morgan Makhuvha. Berea responded by replacing Madzanga Tshiruma with Juliet Ngubane.

It took Berea 88 minute to find the equalizer. Dakalo Ratshitanga beat the keeper with a half volley. The winner was determined through penalty shootout as the full-time score was 1-1. Berea converted all five their chances through Dakalo Ratshitanga, Elisa Ranyaoa, Dzivhuluwani Simba, Awelani Mphigalale and Pfariso Mukoma, while Home Defenders scored only three from the white spot.
