Maweja and Great North in draw

The SAFA ABC Motsepe match between Joe Maweja and Great North FC at the Makhuvha Stadium on Saturday ended in a 1-all draw.

Great North was the superior side from the start as far as possession of the ball was concerned. This resulted in them putting a lot of pressure on the defence of Maweja for the better part of the match.

The first half was characterised by dangerous play from Maweja’s players. To calm the situation, the referee flashed several yellow cards in quick succession and booked players for applying dirty tricks and dangerous play.

Great North scored their goal after their striker, Martins Buda beat his opponents and dished a pre-cooked pass to Kgabo Mphela, who scored easily. The halftime score was 1-0 in favour of Great North.

In the second half Maweja, the local lads, put more pressure on their opponents. The absence of many players in the Maweja defence was felt from the onset. Tsumbedzo Manamela of Maweja could not make the grade as the opponents used him as their freeway.

Maweja’s strikers wasted many opportunities to win the match. The Seshego team’s central back, Johannes Phahlane and Amagelang Masongwa were reprimanded with yellow cards for rough tackling and wasting time.

Maweja introduced Thetshelesani Tshipani and Lufuno Munzhelele for Talifhani Mphakhathi and Thakhani Mashao. Their introduction changed the complexion of the match as the team outclassed their opponents. Mutshidzi Ndou equalized after he finished off a rebound late in the match.

Martin Buela of Great North attacks with the ball, while Thetshelesani Tshipani is running to defend.
