More money for Ramzas KO

The main sponsor of the annual Ramzas Knock-out Soccer Tournament, Mr Lucky Ramano of Matangari village, has put aside R200 000 to fund the 2017 edition of the much-loved sports extravaganza.

In the previous four years, the tournament only covered soccer teams within the Thulamela Local Municipality, but this year all the teams from the Vhembe District who are members of the local football associations, Castle regional leagues and affiliated to SAFA are invited to take part.

Described as one of the most lucrative tournaments in Vhembe, Ramano said the winner would go home with a whooping R25 000, a floating trophy, soccer kit and a ball. The second-placed team will receive R15 000, a soccer kit and ball and the teams in third and fourth position will receive R5 000 and R3 500 respectively. The other teams will all receive consolation prizes.

“Besides prizes, we will also spend money on logistics like paying referees, hiring tents and chairs and the overall organization of the tournament,” Ramano added. He has called upon all teams that are interested in taking part in this year’s tournament to attend a meeting with the organizing committee next Sunday (5 November) at the Makonde Shopping Complex (commonly known as Bulini) at 08:00. “This is where all the logistics of this year’s tournament will be discussed. During that meeting, the teams will also be given the tournament’s bank accounts where they will pay the affiliation fee of R600. It is important for teams to attend this meeting because we are only looking at a maximum of 32 teams, which will be treated on a first-come-first-served basis. We will also be preparing for the tournament kick-off during the weekend of 25 and 26 November.”

Ramano said the tournament aimed to unearth soccer talent in the disadvantaged rural areas of Vhembe. “We will continue to empower local teams, so that we can build a healthy nation while at the same time keeping the youth from the streets. Soccer players should take this tournament very seriously because we have invited professional soccer teams to come and scout for players during the games.”
