Maweja surrender to Polokwane Academy

In their ABC Motsepe League match at the Tshifulanani Stadium on Saturday, Joe Maweja failed to absorb the pressure from Polokwane Academy and lost 0-2.

Maweja lost the game in the middle of the park where their midfielders easily lost possession. Maweja’s defenders, Madilonga Mukwevho and Thetshelesani Tshipani, were forced to work overtime as Academy were all over them for the better part of the first half.

Maweja were forced to fight it with 10 men for about seven minutes. This after their left back, Thetshelesani Tshipani, was taken off the pitch on a stretcher after sustaining a knee injury. Academy used Maweja’s setback to score their opening goal in the 24th minute. William Baloyi unleashed a half volley from the left corner and the keeper of Maweja, Vhutshilo Mafame, watched helplessly as the ball went beyond his reach.

Academy had another scoring chance in the 34th minute when Phuti Malebana received a neat pass from Phillip Nkoana and shot wide from close range. The referee, Mr Thabo Motaung, flashed the first yellow card in the 36th minute. Freddy Chauke of Academy found himself on the wrong side of the football laws when he tackled Omphulusa Masotsha the rough way.

Academy increased the margin three minutes before the half-time whistle. Phuti Malebana scored with a header, following a corner kick that was taken by Elliot Seema.
