Man shoots wife, son and himself

A 66-year-old man from Fondwe apparently killed his 43-year-old wife as well as their one-year-old child before turning the gun on himself last Thursday (10th).

Limpopo police spokesperson Brig Motlafela Mojapelo confirmed the incident and said three people had died. “We have opened a case of murder,” said Mojapelo. The three were identified as Ntsemeni Nevhulaudzi, his wife Margaret Manngo and their son, Muano Nevhulaudzi. He said that the killings could be related to domestic violence.

Mojapelo also appealed to people to desist from violence in the event of misunderstandings. “They should rather try to resolve their disputes in an amicable manner or opt for counselling to avoid unnecessary loss of life,” he said.

Ms Fhatuwani Muzila, daughter of Nevhulaudzi, said that the incident had caught them off guard. “It came as a shock to us, having to lose three people in one day. We are very sad,” she said. “It will be very hard to forget what had happened. We are very hurt as we do not even know what exactly happened to our family members.”

The Thulamela ward councillor Livhuwani Maduse visited the family of the deceased. He said that he was very disappointed when witnessing that some people still used violence to solve their problems. “This is bad and heart-breaking.”

He added that several different structures and organisations were available to assist couples with problems. “All we can do now is to make an appeal to the community not to resort to violence as a way out of their problems,” he said. Maduse called on all couples with problems to approach pastors, social workers or other professional structures that could help them.

Mr Bardwell Mufunwaini of the Munna Ndi Nnyi Men’s Forum condemned the killing. “This is a very sad day for all the people. We are here talking of reconciliation, but here is a man who goes all out to kill his wife in the most gruesome way. It gives a bad name to all men, and this is in spite of all the campaigns by the government and non-governmental organisations that are taking place. Men are still the perpetrators of violence against women and children,” he said.
