MEC Rakgoale visits underperforming schools

Although the Vhembe District is known for producing outstanding matric results, some schools are performing below par.

To remedy this situation, the MEC for Social Development, Nkakareng Rakgoale, visited Mamvuka Secondary School in Nzhelele as part of the back-to-school campaign last Thursday (16th). Last year, the school obtained a 61.4% matric pass rate.

Rakgoale told the learners to have a dogged commitment to their studies. “As a school, you must work hard in order to improve on this year’s matric results. The parents must also continue supporting the school,” she said. Gangsterism, substance abuse and lack of resources have been identified as some of the contributing factors for underachievement.

The MEC was confident that the school would improve its matric results this year. She said if the school managed to get 77% in 2017, it could still improve in 2020. “As the department, we will provide the school with uniforms for learners from disadvantaged families,” she said.

Rakgoale also visited Tswime Secondary School and Miriyavhavha Technical School. The two schools obtained a pass-rate of 37.9% and 60.7% respectively. She was accompanied by the Makhado Mayor, Samuel Munyai, and senior managers of the Department of Education.
