Farewell to Muthuba Reckson Masevhe

Traditional music lovers, together with the Masevhe family and the community of Mutale, are mourning the passing away of Muthuba Reckson Masevhe, who was the father of music icon Bishop Roxley Fhatuwani Masevhe.

Masevhe senior passed away on Saturday, 13 July, in the Tshilidzini Hospital after a long illness. He was 88 years old.

He became a household name between the 1950s and 1960s when he partnered with Nyelisani Singo of Tshapasha village in Dzimauli and released hits such as Zwikho u nndina Vho-Tshinakaho and many more. Masevhe was also popular for his polished skills as an acoustic-guitar player.

He used to be invited to perform at different parties at that time. He also played a big role in influencing his son, Bishop Masevhe, to become involved in music.

Masevhe junior, then a small boy, used to accompany his father to different parties where he was booked for performing. “The influence was big, to the extent that I used to dance to the rhythm of the boiling pot when my mother was cooking,” said Roxley.

Masevhe senior then passed the music baton to his son, Roxley, in the 1970s when he learnt to play a makeshift guitar made from an oil tin. “My father later taught me to play guitar in the French style. He later helped me to launch my music career,” said Roxley, who is also a pastor of his independent church.

He was laid to rest at the sacred cemetery in Thengwe, Madzivhanani, last Friday.
