Shayandima shop owner loses all in in mysterious fire

Screams of I am burning, I am burning! woke up neighbours, who were shocked to find that a nearby shop was on fire.

The incident happened at Shayandima at a shop owned by a Somali resident last Thursday morning around 03:00.

The cause of the fire is unknown, but an electrical fault is suspected as the main cause. The initial assessment of the damage is more than R300 000.

Residents who woke up said they were shocked to hear the screams of the man whom they knew stayed inside the shop. Upon closer inspection they found that he had already managed to escape the inferno, but the whole shop was on fire.

Shop owner Mishamo Habi Tamu said he received a call from his security company informing him that his shop was on fire. "I rushed to the shop as I stay in Thohoyandou, only to find that my whole shop was in flames. I called rthe police and firefighters, who responded very fast but could not save anything as the whole building was engulfed in flames. We stood there helplessly as all the stock went up in flames. I am devastated; it happened at a time that I had just bought new stock," he said.

Tamu said he was not suspecting any foul play as there was a person sleeping in the shop. “What we are suspecting is an electrical fault. I will just report it as a formality as no foul play is suspected," he said.

He added that the fire had put him back a lot and he must start from scratch.
