Munene Hlongwane (18) was killed by Baloyi.

43 years in prison for Munene's killer

The family of the murdered 18-year-old University of Johannesburg (UJ) engineering student, Munene Hlungwane, are now more satisfied and feel that justice has been served. This follows after Enoch Baloyi (21) was sentenced to 43 years in prison last Thursday in the Thohoyandou High Court.

According to Herman Zitha, uncle to the deceased, the family was still struggling to accept the loss and going up and down to courts was just like rubbing an unhealed wound with salt. “It will take time for us to heal. As we are speaking now, her mother is not well.”

Munene, who was a first-year student at UJ, visited her family in Giyani Section F during the June recess last year when she was shot dead in what was a suspected armed robbery.

“We cannot change the judge’s decision. We wanted him to get five life sentences, but we are pleased with the ruling,” Zitha added.

Zitha explained that the motive behind the shooting was robbery as her phone was stolen during the process and it was later traced to the suspect.

After the sentencing, a group of community members and family members wearing blue T-shirts gathered outside the court to celebrate the sentencing.

Enoch Baloyi was sentenced to 43 years in prison.

A group of supporters demonstrating outside the court, asking for a hefty sentence for the murderer.
