Phalaphala FM sports commentator Mike Mutshinya is no more

The radio and sport fraternity are in mourning, following the death of well-known Phalaphala FM rugby and cricket commentator Michael Mutshinya (40).

He passed away in the Steve Biko Hospital after a long illness last Wednesday.

He joined the SABC radio as commentator in 2002.

Family spokesperson Adam Mutshinya said the family was saddened by the passing away of Mutshinya, as he was regarded as a light to the family and the community at large. “We are truly devastated, as we have lost a pillar of the family that everyone looked up to for advice,” he said.

He added that Mutshinya had played a big role in uplifting the standard of rugby and cricket in South Africa.

Mr Freddy Sadiki, Phalaphala FM station manager, was at a loss for words. “To lose such an iconic commentator is painful. Radio has lost an asset that will be difficult to replace. His commentator skills were outstanding and he was one of the most loyal employees we could rely on. A dark cloud of mourning is hanging in our station and things will no longer be the same without him. We thought he would recover and come back to join us but, unfortunately, God’s plan was far different from ours.”

The funeral service will start at 6:00 tomorrow (Saturday) at the deceased’s home and proceed to the Vhangani cemetery for burial. Mutshinya is survived by his wife and two boys.
