Limpopo roads remain most dangerous in SA

Limpopo simply cannot shake off its status as one of the nine provinces that has the most dangerous roads in South Africa.

According to a recent report released by the Road Traffic Management Corporation (RTMC), motorists travelling to and from Gauteng will inevitably use at least one of the routes ranked in the top 20 of experiencing most accidents.

Residents of the Soutpansberg will not be able to get around this as the N1 between Louis Trichardt and Makhado has been listed as the fourth-highest accident route in the province. The N1 between Mokopane and Polokwane is regarded as the third most dangerous road to travel on.

When travelling between Mokopane and Mookgopong, also on the N1, motorists will travel on the ninth-highest accident route. The R71 road between Polokwane and Tzaneen is the tenth most dangerous road.

This is, however, not a new trend.  Last year, the MEC for Transport, Mrs Mapula Mokaba Phukwana, went so far as to state that Limpopo's roads are among the most dangerous in the world.

Shortly after the RTMC’s report, an accident along the N1 north (between Musina and Louis Trichardt) claimed the lives of eight people. The accident occurred on Sunday, 10 September, about 55km from Louis Trichardt along the N1.

According to reports received a Toyota Quantum, travelling to Bulawayo, collided head-on with a private vehicle travelling in the opposite direction.

The Limpopo police's spokesperson, Lt-Col Moatshe Ngoepe, said that six people were killed instantly in the collision. Among these were two adults and a child in the private vehicle and three occupants travelling in the Quantum. Ngoepe identified the deceased as Nkosiyapha Sibanda (36), Mlapho Lukas (32), Jonas Phiri (30), Zwelibanzi Maxwell Sibili (44), Terry Sibili (37) and Yemeni Petrus Sibili (44). Two more people later died in hospital. At the time of our going to press, their names had not yet been released.
