Shock as woman's head is chopped off

The family of the woman who was beheaded by her lover at Muledzhi in the Mutale area say they have many more questions than answers about the circumstances under which she was killed.

Mother of four children Ms Takalani Siali (39) had her head cut off, allegedly after an argument. The shocking incident unfolded at a house on Saturday, shortly before sunset.

The suspect, Tshifhiwa Munyai (43), appeared in the Mutale Magistrate’s Court regarding the incident on Monday. He allegedly used an axe to chop the deceased all over her body and ended up cutting her head off. He was not asked to plead, and the case was postponed to 29 August for further investigations and for mental observation of the accused.

Ms Siali joins an endless list of women who have become victims of either ritual murders or domestic violence in Vhembe and Mopani in recent times.

Mr Nteketeni Nemutudi, brother-in-law to the deceased, said the family was going through a very traumatic experience, not knowing what had led to the man's decision to kill her. "My niece died a very painful death at the hands of a man who was supposed to protect her and her children. It is very traumatizing and this is something that we won't easily forget. I am struggling to eat or sleep, as I see the image of her lying headless every night," said Nemutudi.

He further indicated that the woman had been a very quiet and humble person who did not deserve to die like that.  "She leaves four children, who do not have parents to look after them," added Nemutudi.

A representative of the Mubvumoni Sanco, Mr Naledzani Mulovhedzi, said the incident came as a great shock to the entire community. "We have never seen something like this in this community. We are making an appeal to all who have domestic problems to approach state programmes and professionals and non-governmental organizations for help and not to resort to violence to solve their problems."

The suspect, Tshifhiwa Munyai (43), in a relaxed state after his appearance in the Mutale Magistrate’s Court on Monday.
