Emerging hip-hop artist Ripfumelo Ntimani, aka Shannon, is set to launch his music career with his debut EP, titled Silver Lining.
The rapper of Mbhokota village, near Elim, inherited his love of music from his father, Lucky Ntimani, who is a multi-talented, self-taught musician and wood carver. Lucky produces sculptures from wood and makes traditional music instruments.
The 21-year-old Shannon’s upcoming album promises to wow music lovers. “Hip-hop music has always been my obsession, but I often awoke to the sound of my father playing his guitar in the morning, and this too has contributed to my desire to become a musician myself,” he said.
He was also highly inspired by award-winning musician Nsikayesizwe Ngcobo, known professionally as Nasty C. “I’ve been listening to his music since the early stages of my teenage years. Because I listen to my role models’ music all the time, it inspires a lot of the music I put out there,” he said.
Silver Lining, a collaboration with KindlyNxsh (Lucasraps’ producer), MusiholiQ, Leon Hlabathi SA and Quality Hertz, contains six tracks. “I have been working on this extended play since 2015. The project means a lot to me as I’ve put my life story into the words of the songs. It’s really about the things I’m up to every day,” he said.
Shannon is a third-year law student at the University of the Free State (UFS) and his love of music was sparked at the tender age of 13. He said that, while he was focused on his studies at the moment, he was also sharpening his lyrical skills in the music fraternity.
He believes that his music can provide therapy to his audience. “A song can make you feel anything. You can tell what the person is going through. Sometimes music helps you get through rough times, and that is therapeutic.”
He explained that he was using his voice as a vessel for his peers who shared the same dreams and worked hard to accomplish them. “Music is the most powerful and versatile language the human species has, regardless of genres and styles,” he said.
