A local hip-hop artist and fashion designer, popularly known as GP, believes that music and fashion go hand in hand, so he utilises his artistic skills to promote fashion by combining it with his music.
GP is not only an exceptional rapper, but is also establishing a name for himself in the fashion industry. His mother, he says, remains his biggest inspiration. “I grew up wearing fashionable clothes and from there on it led to me sewing my own clothes. My mother pushed me to take it further and turn it into a career. I don’t come from a privileged background where I could always afford clothes, so making clothes became a passion,” he said.
GP believes that his fashion sense allows him to stand out as an individual. “I value my independence in that sense,” he said.
The 27-year-old artist began his music journey at the age of 14. Meeting local hip-hop rapper and producer Thuso Luvha, known by his stage name Too $wagged, in 2010 was probably the most significant moment in his career. “I first met Thuso through a friend. He saw potential and talent in me and introduced me to the music industry. He gathered a few local artists together and they started BLR Fam (Black Rocks Records) under his guidance. He took us from the streets and gave us focus and purpose.”
Originally born Nhlanhla Vukela in Sebokeng in Johannesburg, GP relocated to Mpheni Block B2 near Elim years ago, where he completed his high school. His debut single track, titled 4pm in Braam, was released late last year via Spooky Records. “I dedicated this song to my best friend and his mother who passed away in the same week. I drew a lot of inspiration from Boyz N Bucks, who showed me the vast possibilities of music and life and how I can pursue my passion,” he said.
