Music lovers woke up to the thrilling new sounds from the prolific reggae poetry artist, Rooijah, when his much-anticipated album, Love them all, trust no one, was released last Friday, 8 April.
Rooijah, born Ndivhuwo Rogers Tshipenga, drew inspiration from veteran reggae poetry artists such as Jamaican Jean Binta Breeze and the UK-based dub reggae artist Linton Kwesi Johnson. “I used to listen to their music when I was young, and the poetic words inspired me. We don’t have many reggae music poets locally, and that motivated me to take a different route,” said Rooijah, who hails from Ha-Lambani Nzanwe village outside Thohoyandou.
He said he had a special relationship with the late local reggae icon, Jahman Chiganja. “I used to visit him at his home, and we would sing together. I also accompanied him to his gigs where we sang and danced and entertained reggae lovers. My love for music grew stronger, until I became ready to stand on my own.”
His debut album, Watch out, school children, saw the light in 2014, followed by his second album, Criminal Law, in 2016. The third album, called Muloro, was released in 2019, with Love them all, trust no one being the most recent.
Rooijah said that, based on the performance of his previous albums, he had no doubt in his mind that this latest album would also become a great success. “I have worked hard to build a foundation for my music career, and this is the time to reap the sweet fruits of my labour. People love my music because it is unique. As we have so few reggae poetry artists here in South Africa, it gives me the advantage to shine freely.”
The new album, recorded at Masana Records and mixed and mastered by DJ Davic, contains thrilling songs, including Love them all, trust no one (title track), Faranani, Jah is my light, Hu do difha, and others. It also features well-known artists such as Davisto Makwarela, Bashy Jahbless, Awee, Zerah, Rofhiwa Nethwadzi, Humbulani Ramagwedzha, and Gwaan Dread.
