Sehlapelo loves making a difference in people's lives

Musina FM’s Sunday morning show, called Mulisa wa ndele, offers just the right balance for those who, for whatever reason, cannot make it to church. The show, aired between 06:00 and 09:00, plays a variety of gospel music, interviews local gospel singers and gives pastors an opportunity to preach the Word of God over the airwaves.

“If you are held up with something and cannot go to church on Sunday, don’t worry, because I will bring the Word of God to you in the comfort of your home. All you have to do is listen attentively to your radio on Sunday mornings and don’t change that dial,” says Maria Sehlapelo, who presents the Mulisa wa ndele show.

Sehlapelo considers herself lucky to have shifted from merely entertaining the listeners to contributing to changing people’s lives in a positive way. “As a Christian myself, it is easy for me to present Mulisa wa ndele because I interact with listeners about things I feel strongly about. I spend a lot of my time reading the Bible and it gives me wisdom on how I should interact with my listeners, who come from different denominations. What makes my programme successful is that I pray before I go into the studio and ask the Lord to give me wisdom to do my work well.”

Of course, it also helps to be thoroughly prepared before a presenter slides in behind the microphone. “I make sure that my content differs from week to week, depending on what God instructs me to tell his people. I read various religious books to equip myself with the required knowledge that I end up sharing with my listeners. Besides that, I also have a very good working relationship with the Musina Council of Churches, and the assistance I get from the various pastors helps me to present a balanced show.”

Although Sehlapelo may be unfamiliar to some, she is not a novice to radio broadcasting. She first joined Musina FM in 2010 as newsreader and presenter and, after a five-year break, reclaimed her seat behind the mic again at the beginning of this year. Besides the Mulisa wa ndele show on Sundays, she also reads the Sepedi news and presents the current affairs programme Tshidziki tsha mafhungo from 18:00 to 19:00 during the week.
