Majiga honours Dan Tshanda with a tribute album

Local musician Mpho Majiga has just released his latest album, titled I’m Back, in honour of the legendary Nndivheseni Daniel Tshanda, who passed away in January 2019.

Majiga played various instruments for Dan Tshanda’s band, Splash, at big music festivals across the country, also touring Botswana, Namibia, Zimbabwe, Lesotho and the UK with them. He considered Tshanda a role model and had tremendous respect for the late musician.

Those who know Tshanda’s music will concur that Majiga’s album pays a true tribute to the man as it contains the same unique ‘Dalom’ music style that Tshanda was known for. Dalom music is driven by medium to fast tempos, multiple keyboards, catchy electronic drums and heavy bass guitar.

As far as Majiga is concerned, Tshanda was amazingly talented and shared the Dalom stable with a powerful assortment of successful artists, such as the Dalom Kids, Matshikos, Patricia Majalisa and Peacock. “Dan Tshanda was my musical dad, big brother, and mentor. He contributed greatly to my music career. It is a pity that he was more recognised and loved in foreign countries than in his own home country, here in South Africa. I want to show South Africans that Dan Tshanda was a legend in his own right and that his legacy will live on forever.”

Majiga, who shuffles between the gospel and disco music genres, released his tribute album on 18 February this year, which has been received well by Dalom fans and radio stations. The album boasts 12 disco tracks, including the title track, I’m back, as well as Beautiful Dream, Ntwana, Jigijigi, Our legends, and Stop the war. One of the songs, called Mukomana, describes the brotherly relationship between Majiga and Tshanda.

Majiga was born in Ha-Mashau, outside Louis Trichardt, but grew up in Ha-Mutsha near Thohoyandou. His love of music started at an early age when he used to sing and play on drums made from old oil cans. His musical breakthrough came in 1997 when he attended a church crusade for the Assembly of God at Ha-Mutsha village. He was singing along with the church choir when one of the members heard his beautiful voice and invited him to join the choir.

This multi-instrumentalist, vocalist, dancer, producer, and sound engineer has also worked with top producers and artists such as Jabu Nkabinde, Andy Masiye and Solly Moholo. His talents, however, are not limited to music performances. The man can apparently act too and has featured in television drama series such as Muvhango and Generations.

I’m Back is available in all online digital stores, but those who want hard copies of the album on CD can contact Majiga directly on 078 381 9090.
