The 27-year-old Uapfa Nemavhola ranks among the finest of gospel music artists that Vhembe District has witnessed in the past few years.
He stated that music had discovered him, and that it had come to him as a calling and that he had responded to the calling. “It is not just a claim that music discovered me; music started inside my heart as lyrics accompanied by melodies,” he said. “I would hum a tune and those around me would say the tune was appealing and infectious as if it were a song already. That was when I started taking my music seriously.”
A resident of Mulodi village, and a plumber by profession, Uapfa does not rush to release his music for public consumption but makes sure that he is satisfied with the product. He even shares with others by having some fellow artists listen to his projects and offer input. “As an artist, I have learned to respect the constructive comments from those who know better about music,” he said.
His music is unique, and it sends out a contagious appeal to those who listen to it. He has just released some songs that are all making waves on some community radio stations. “My recent songs are Anonga Yesu haho, and Muhali nndwani, and they are like anthems that everybody sings along with when they play,” he said.
He has been a lead singer in the church since around 2005, when he first sang in a way that left those around him amazed by his talent. “They were attending the church with me every Sunday, but they didn't know that God had bestowed the talent of a singer on me,” he said. “Music to me is a platform that I use to connect with God and spread the Word of God to the world.”
His dream is to create a music school where youths can attend daily after school. “This will keep them busy and away from crime-related activities,” he said.
He is inspired by Israel Houghton. “I like the fact that he ministers the word of God in his songs,” he said.
He concluded by revealing that he had just finished working on a single, Dzowa mbondo. “It will be released soon for radio airplay and we'll see to it that it is available online,” he said.
